Sweet Relief: the Story of Marla Ruzicka
Marla was a Lake County girl who graduated from Clear Lake High School in Lakeport, California, with a reputation for her lively, funny and passionate personality, and driving around town at the wheel of her "protest-mobile" with the radio blaring or speeding on the lake with her twin brother, Mark.
The daughter of Nancy and Cliff Ruzicka, Marla joined numerous causes for peace and justice, traveling to many countries, risking her life in behalf of improvished and grieving adults and children in their losses during military combat.
Marla had a natural inclination for working with innocent civilian victims in war zones; she was considered a saint by Iraqian survivors because of her compassionate efforts to count their casualties during the war.
Today, her non-profit organization, Global Exchange, is the only American NGO still existing in Iraq. After her death at age 28 by a car bomb on Baghdad's treacherous Airport Road, Marla's heroric life was chronicled by Jennifer Abrahamson in a touching biography, Sweet Relief: the Marla Ruzicka Story, published by Simon Spotlight Entertainment (a Simon & Schuster imprint, 2006). The book, still under consideration for a Hollywood screenplay and feature film, may be found at Watershed Books, 305 N. Main St in Lakeport 707 263-5787.
